Taxpayers Oppose Goodyear, Arizona Property Tax Increase During Pandemic
The Issue
This petition respectfully requests the City of Goodyear to NOT raise property taxes in 2020 - the year of the economically destructive COVID-19 Pandemic.
We the People did our part staying home during lock down. Now we ask you do your part in not raising our taxes so residents who’ve lost jobs and income can recover.
City of Goodyear is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $207,437 or 2%.
"Arizona is experiencing record job losses as a result of this crisis. New unemployment insurance filings have approached half a million over the last few weeks," according to the Arizona Republic.
Let’s take a look at Scottsdale where its council cast a 4-3 vote in May giving staff direction to NOT implement a 2% property tax increase.
Why can’t Goodyear follow in its steps during an economically devastating pandemic?
Let Goodyear know the People are asking for a one-year reprieve in a property tax hike to help those affected with COVID-19 caused job losses, medical bills, and funeral arrangements.
On June 8th, "For only the second time in the past nine weeks, initial applications for Arizona jobless benefits have increased, and the number of Arizonans seeking special federal unemployment benefits for the first time has hit its highest level yet." -Arizona Republic
"In April, Arizona’s unemployment rate jumped to a staggering 15% — far higher than the worst period of the 2008 Great Recession. The financial forecasting site MoneyGeek.com put the true rate of unemployment in Arizona at 19% in April, when adjusted for workers who have simply given up looking. Workforce participation fell to a record low 51%," reports the Payson Roundup.
In September, 2019, Kiplinger released its "Arizona's 30 Largest Cities and Towns Ranked for Local Taxes". Goodyear ranked 22 of 30 noting an "Above-Average Tax Burden".
We're only asking for a one year reprieve in tax hikes so residents can have some time to recover from the devastation of job losses during the pandemic of 2020.
On June 22nd, Goodyear City Council holds a hearing on June 22, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. Please sign this petition letting your city leaders know why you would like to not see a tax hike this year.
