Remove the PITBULL BAN!

The Issue

Hello friends!

If you didn't already know, October is Pit Bull Awareness Month, with National Pit Bull Awareness Day falling on October 24th this year. I feel like it is important to say that I have been a dog lover for as long as I can remember; my dog, your dog, stray dogs, ALL dogs. But being the person I am I was always particularly drawn to the "vicious" breeds, because I knew they weren't to blame for their breed. I planned from a young age to prove society wrong and change the narrative around the Pit Bull breed.

& It has always been my plan to begin here. The Codified Ordinances of Gallipolis, OH states "It is unlawful to own, possess, keep, exercise control over, maintain, harbor, transport, or sell any pit bull dog within the City. 'Pit bull terrier' is used herein includes any American Pit Bull Terrier, any Bull Terrier, any Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier breed of dog, or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding the breed of American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier as to be identifiable as partially the breed of American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier." Violating this can result in a Misdemeanor and your dog being confined by the Dog Warden until ordered from the court.

As an owner of a Pit Bull who is obedient, trained, and shows ZERO sign of aggression, I'm so sick of this innocent breed being BULLIED. Many studies claim that Pit Bull Terriers are responsible for over 1/3 of the attacks on record in the last twenty years BUT these studies don’t take into account the fact that Pit Bulls are an extremely popular breed (or a category to throw a mutt into if they slightly resemble a Pit Bull) and the truth is when you have more Pit Bulls than any other breed, it makes sense that they would have a higher volume of incidents. In the 1970's Dobermans were the most popular breed - in the 70's there was also more "attacks" from Dobermans than any other breed. In the 1990's Rottweilers were the popular breed - in the 90's there was an increase in Rottweiler attacks. Do you see the point I'm trying to make?

Coming from someone who owns TWO of the "Most Aggressive Breeds" and who has also been attacked by both a Shih Tzu & Yorkie - I am OVER this. Please considering signing. The majority of Dog Shelters are full of Pit Bulls with huge hearts who just need a loving home. How can we save these INNOCENT dogs if we can't even allow them in our city? What point are we making by listing this breed? What point is made? A dog is a dog. It is trained or it is not. It is vicious or it is not. Don't pair a breed with a personality trait. I'm on a mission to fight bad reputations and stereotypes. I'm an advocate and will always stand up for this breed. Banning vicious DOGS is understandable, banning a "breed" is ignorant. It's 2020, let's do better.

Please consider signing this petition, as it is only a small step in the right direction.

Thank you.

FACTS:

Pit Bulls are incredibly human-friendly. They were bred to be! As of December 2017, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a passing rate of 4% for temperament according to the American Temperament Test Society. A temperament test gauges how well dogs react to new people and different environments. They performed better than many popular family dogs such as Beagles, Chihuahuas, Collies, Poodles, and even Golden Retrievers.

Dogs are often misidentified as Pit Bulls. “Pit-Bull type” dogs were visually misidentified 60% of the time in a recent study. There are only four breeds that are considered Pit Bulls, but many dogs have a “Pit Bull look.” Because of this, Pit Bulls are getting blamed for incidents they did not commit because of misidentification, causing inaccurate statistics.

A Pit Bull is not a breed! The term “Pit Bull” includes a multitude of different dog breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Bully.
