Discontinue the use of Dursban (Chlorpyrifos)

Discontinue the use of Dursban (Chlorpyrifos)
The Issue
Dursban (chlorpyrifos) is a pesticide that Edmonton uses to kill pests - particularly mosquito larvae. Exposure has been linked to neurological effects, persistent developmental disorders, autoimmune disorders, and can delay the mental development of children. A recent study shows that women exposed to Dursban during pregnancy can increase the chance of their children having autism three fold. It’s also extremely toxic to fish, aquatic organisms, bees, and even natural predators to mosquitoes such as bats and dragonflies.
As a result it is on PAN International’s list of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for global phase-out, and has been discontinued for use in every city across Canada..... except Edmonton.
Additionally, like most organophosphorous pesticides, chlorpyrifos is prone to drift. The semi-volatile chemical readily evaporates from leaf and soil surfaces to become airborne, especially when outdoor temperatures are high. Once in gas form, the neurotoxin can migrate to nearby homes, playgrounds, and schools putting residents, their children, and pets at risk.
This pesticide has shown levels measured in locations distant from the sources of its release, so residents in neighboring cities and towns also have serious cause for concern.
Although there are many safe alternatives to Dursban (Chlorpyrifos) for pest control, Edmonton is the last remaining city in Canada to implement them. The health of our citizens and wildlife is just as important as in other cities, and therefore this product should be discontinued here as well.
