Sign for Community Gardens to Protect Drivers from Vehicular Accidents

The Issue

I, Michael Hillman, a volunteer with the Duluth Community Garden Program, and a gardener at the Cook Home site off-of Arrowhead Road, urge the City of Duluth Engineering Department to read and respond to this petition, signed by fellow gardeners, for the placement of a clearly-visible sign that will mark the location of the dirt road that leads into the gardens and/or indicate the presence of the gardens themselves. As I prepare to turn onto that dirt road leading into the Cook Home Community Gardens, I sense that drivers on Arrowhead Road do not see the road that I am turning onto, as it is cut-into the curb, and concealed by grass. Furthermore, it is sensible that drivers behind me assume that my left-turn signal indicates that I will turn onto Rice Lake Road further-ahead, as the turn-lane for Rice Lake begins in the same area as the dirt road leading into the gardens. I fear that, someday, one of those drivers might rear-end me or another gardener as we slow or stop our vehicles to turn into the garden. If the Engineering Department of the City of Duluth posts a clearly-visible sign to indicate to drivers on Arrowhead Road the presence of the dirt road and/or the community gardens, us gardeners will feel more secure that other drivers on Arrowhead Road will give us proper time and space to make the turn in a safe manner. This sign would also bring awareness to the two community gardens there, the Arrowhead Community Gardens through St. Louis County and the Cook Home Community Gardens, one of many Duluth Community Garden Program sites. This increased awareness will inspire other community members to garden, thus, making our city healthier! We, the community gardeners of the two gardens listed-above, through our signatures of this petition, ask for the assistance from the City of Duluth Engineering Department to make the entrance into the gardens more visible to drivers on Arrowhead Road with a clearly-visible sign. We will appreciate your assistance!
