City of Cola, SC: Legalize Mini Pigs

City of Cola, SC: Legalize Mini Pigs
The Issue
Miniature pet pigs are still considered livestock in the City of Columbia. While surrounding areas outside city limits allow mini pets pigs, City of Columbia does not. I am filing an official request for an amendment in the zoning ordinance regarding mini pigs as pets, and I am hoping that this petition can help show local support. Major surrounding cities such as Savannah, GA, Atlanta, GA, and Charlotte, NC have updated their ordinances to allow mini pet pigs. Mini pigs live as family pets just as dogs do. They get vaccinated, spay/neutered before 6 months of age, annual checkups, parasite control, require appropriate housing and containment, etc... They are also affectionate, intelligent, and excellent communicators. They can be trained to sit, stay, spin, shake hands, wave, distinguish shapes and colors, and lots more! A mini pig only 12-18 inches, and 50-150 pounds on average. This is smaller than many dogs including the English Mastiff, Newfoundland, Great Dane, Neapolitan, Irish Wolfhound, and Saint Bernard. Livestock animals are kept for use and profit, with their main purpose being financial gain through food production. The purpose of a mini pet pig is to be a family companion. In addition to having a mini pet pig as a companion, I would like to have them as an emotional support animal. My husband is very allergic to cats and dogs, so those are not an option for me. Please consider helping me and other members of my community by signing this petition to allow Pet Mini Pigs within city limits. Thank you!
