"James Island neighborhood groups and civic activists have decried the City of Charleston's "gathering place" development on Maybank Highway almost as one. With good reason.

The crowded highway can barely handle the existing traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours-and sometimes in between. The apartment project will add hundreds more vehicles that will further strain road capacity.

And as the critics note, the apartment buildings and the five-story parking deck are out of scale and character with the existing neighborhood".
