I get caught up in the hussle of every day life and I was slowed down by my five year old the other day.  I taught her not to litter ; “to save the dolphins”.   I told her how a piece of trash can make it’s way to the ocean.  This stuck with my child , but me , it was a lesson taught and not fully practiced.  I failed my child and her baby sister.  By talking and not truly acting. 

I want my kids to grow up and be able to love nature and all that it has to offer. From the oceans to the forests and deserts to the arctic; all parts of the world.  The beauty it holds; is powerful.  From the scenery to different and endangered animal species. The terrain and the plant life’s that make up our world. 

I remember the wonder and ah when I was a kid in school learning and seeing all the different parts of the world. I fear the day that our children’s children see these same wonders of the world and it’s used only as a once upon a time or a past tense learning lesson.  Could you imagine having our children talk to their kids about dolphins and whales and giraffes and koala bears the same way we talk about dinosaurs? The thought of that is something I can’t even bare. 

Carlsbad , we must get back to the basics of recycling. Having a local recycle drop off is one of the easiest ways we as a community can protect our children and their love of learning about our planet.  We can do this, it was here once before. Let’s get back on track and do our part in this world. We owe it to ourselves and our future.
