Say No To Toxic Landfill Expansion In Campbell River

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500!

There is a plan approved by the Province of British Columbia to expand the Old Pulp Mill's toxic solid waste site by double the size based on an old permit from 1972.

An exsisting old dumping site attached to this permit is leaching an unacceptable amount of contaminants into the ocean (see document below).

The plan is 82,000 tons dumped per year: Boiler ash, Asbestos, Solid sewage sludge, Dredged material, Contaminated collection water, Demo debris, Contaminated metal/wood, and mineral soil would all be approved materials...

In addition to signing this petition, please be sure to email the BC Ministry of Environment (you have a limited time before they close for feedback possibly Dec 15th):

Reference waste permit #1602 and give your reason this action should not proceed.

Such as:

  1. An Endangered Roosevelt Elk herd lives right in the proposed development area.
  2. Residents live nearby, in a farming neighborhood.
  3. Some material could be shipped in on barges over the ocean channel (this is already happening).
  4. Town residents were not consulted or clearly informed (dead lines to oppose the province are closing and the environmental protection notice posted on the highway has been removed!).
  5. The company in question is company #0942069 Ltd. and is in insolvency court under the name Quick Silver.
  6. There in an application underway for the company to be free from the requirement to inform the public of what they are dumping.
  7. Many neighbors have wells and natural springs which connect to an underground aquifer which has not been tested for contaminants.
  8. The proposed landfill site will rely on a water collection and pumping system, and will only keep contaminants from running into the ocean, when the system is balanced and operating properly.

Toxins have been found in the tidal flats!

See the whole operations plan here, and pass this on.
