Allow Paddleboarding on the Glenmore Reservoir

Allow Paddleboarding on the Glenmore Reservoir
The Issue
The City of Calgary doesn't allow paddleboarding on the Glenmore Reservoir which is really disapointing and the result of a lack of knowledge and understanding about the fastest growing water sport in the world. Calgary is an amazing city known around the world for its many outdoor pursuits. The city claims that paddleboarding is similar to swimming in that people are likely to fall off their boards. I have never fallen off my board and people are no more likely to fall off a paddleboard than fall out of a kayak, canoe or sailboat. I have received comments from people that learned to sail on the reservoir stating they spent more time in the water than in their boat. I struggle then with why it's OK to allow it for other activities but not for paddleboarding. The city could generate additional revenue by offering lessons and rentals. In addition having the ability to utilize a body of water within city limits would most certainly increase sales of paddleboards and accessories from local water sports businesses. Other cities such as Canmore, AB and Austin, TX allow paddleboarding on their reservoirs. You can swim in the Elbow River which is directly upstream of the reservoir, dogs swim in it, birds and fish contaminate the water. I'm not convinced paddlboarding is any different than any other water craft. If you love your city and you love paddleboarding please sign this petition!!
