City of Burnaby: Invest in residents safety

City of Burnaby: Invest in residents safety
Why this petition matters
On Thursday May 5, 2022, a 14 year old girl was killed when she was struck by a construction vehicle hauling a dump truck. Her friends had to endure the trauma of witnessing her death. We cannot allow this to happen again.
Our residential neighbourhood has been under siege for the last two plus years due to industry (18 Wheels and Warehousing and Trucking formerly Speedee Transport and Trucking), roadworks, the Greater Vancouver Watermain project and the city's housing density project of 21 towers on 11th Avenue and the construction of mid-density housing on 14th Avenue and 15th Street as well as construction of the two skating rinks on 18th Street.
A year ago, well before Thursday's tragedy, the city, the RCMP, the construction company and trucking company were made aware of other dangerous activity by trucks and construction vehicles in our area, including a truck striking another young person in the area and cars being struck by trucks. The combined projects in our neighbourhood is overly aggressive and overly ambitious and puts the safety of residents at serious risk of injury and death.
We, the neighbourhood residents of South Burnaby demand that the City of Burnaby act and act now to ensure that the safety of residents and workers in our neighbourhood be made priority number one - NOW.
What are we asking for?
A sidewalk along the full length of the east side of 11th Avenue.
Installation of speed bumps along the length of 11th Avenue.
Clear signage indicating a speed limit of no more than 30 km.
Enforcement of these new measures following these changes for a period of no less than 6 months.
We need action now and we need your support. Please sign this petition and consider coming with us to speak with City Council to make our demands known. Updates will follow as well as an upcoming vigil to honour the life of the young girl. Please note, your address and full name is helpful in indicating to the city that you are a person and not a computer bot. Please do share this petition with any family, friends or coworkers you know who live and or work in the area. Thank you.
