Mayor Walsh: No More Heroin Needles at Orchard Gardens K-8 School

The Issue

Methadone Mile in Boston is now spreading into our local neighborhoods including the schools our children attend. Recently, a student was pricked during recess by a heroin tainted needle left behind by an addict at the Orchard Gardens K-8 School in Roxbury. Needles are found on a daily basis by parents, students and staff. Students have been restricted from playing outside due to the safety hazard this is causing. Some are suffering from emotional stress after running into these sharps numerous times.

We demand the City Of Boston including Mayor Walsh, City Councilors at large & Roxbury's City Council Kim Janey to take immediate action to protect our children from these needles. These are the short term immediate actions we demand:

1. An 8' fence with push bar exits securing the playground area

2. Deep cleaning of playground structure (Pressure Wash) to remove any bodily fluids from the area.

3. Grass cut as low as possible, trim all bushes and rake complete area to eliminate the threat of hidden needles.

4. Remove and replace wood chips to ensure all hidden needles are removed.

5. Consistent daily morning, mid day & afternoon sweeps of the area

We will continue to put pressure on the City of Boston until our kids are safe and school grounds are free of needles.
