Aggiornamento sulla petizioneBoroondara, it’s time to change the date!

NOW RUNNING UNTIL AT LEAST JULY - SO PLEASE HELP SPREAD OUR PETITION TO CHANGE THE DATE

We started the petition in January to build up momentum, and now plan to present it to Council sometime around NAIDOC week.  This week, Geelong was the latest council to vote to stop recognising 26 January as Australia Day, joining three other Victorian councils that have ceased holding citizenship ceremonies and other events on that date.  The council sought community feedback before making its decision, and about 68% of survey respondents said change was needed. Every one of the 447 First Nations respondents to the survey “wanted a change to the way the day is commemorated”, a report to councillors said.

Want some words to say about it? Here's a good history.

Perhaps we can push Boroondara into holding a community consultation.

Please publicise it on social media via Facebook groups, SMS chats, Twitter, email and WhatsApp.  Please also make a comment.

One way to help spread it is once you have signed, to click the heart symbol in a comment and it will give you Twitter and Facebook options. You can then add your own text such as this: Please support this petition to get Boroondara Council to Cease holding citizenship ceremonies on January 26, commencing in 2024, and advocate to the Federal Government to change the date.

Then share it into groups (but be aware of group rules, of course) and with friends by direct message.

Thanks for supporting this cause.
