Save Austin Now PAC Endorses USAF Veteran Esala Wueschner for City Council District 3

He's the Only Candidate for City Council District 3 Who Pledges to Oppose 'Housing First' Policy Failures

AUSTIN, TX — Today nonpartisan Save Austin Now PAC announced it is endorsing Esala Wueschner for Austin City Council District 3, which encompasses parts of South, Southeast and East Austin, including the neighborhoods of West Congress / East Congress, St. Edwards, East Riverside, Pleasant Valley, Montopolis and East Cesar Chavez surrounding Guerrero Park. Incumbent Sabino ”Pio” Renteria is term-limited, making this an open seat.

“Esala Wueschner is the only candidate in District 3 who understands how serious the problems are facing our city,” said Save Austin Now PAC co-founders Matt Mackowiak and Cleo Petricek. “Of all the candidates running, he is the only one who has pledged to oppose the ‘Housing First’ policy approach on homelessness that San Francisco has championed (and Austin has embraced with failing results for the past three years). Esala is a U.S. Air Force veteran, who served at Laughlin AFB. He grew up poor in Sri Lanka before legally immigrating to the U.S. where he learned English. He works in tech here in Austin and understands the issues young residents are facing. He wants to reverse the unconscionable 40% pay increase for the mayor and the city council, reduce property taxes for small businesses, use audits to protect taxpayers and ensure core services are provided, and ban out of state contributions to local candidates. We are asking every Save Austin Now supporter to vote for and directly support Esala in this crucial race.”

“I want to thank Save Austin Now PAC for their support,” said Wueschner. “We all want to improve standard of living for every Austin resident. I am running for City Council in District 3 to increase transparency, communication, and prioritize affordability.”

PROP B LAWSUIT

Save Austin Now and four local business owners are suing the City of Austin for their failure to fully enforce Prop B, despite it passing in May 2021 by a 58%-42% vote. We had our first procedural hearing this past Thursday (Sept. 22). We should have another update either this week. If we prevail, we will move to discovery and depositions quickly.

If you have specific examples of illegal public camping inside the City of Austin, you can email us photos, video and explanations here. Please provide as full an explanation as possible, including when/where and what happened. Please also include your contact information. If you are interested in becoming a plaintiff to our lawsuit, please email Matt.

Our lawsuit will take some time and while we have excellent, committed lawyers, this battle will require resources. You can donate to our legal effort here. If you wish to send a check to ("Save Austin Now PAC" and mail to 807 Brazos Street Suite 202, Austin, TX 78701).
