HOMELESS CAMPING ORDINANCE UPDATE

Our worst fears have been realized.

The 'point in time' study, which was conducted by Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO) and its volunteers in January, found the ‘unsheltered homeless’ count increase from 1,086 in 2019 to 1,574 in 2020, a 45% increase.

Our homeless population is rapidly growing, and this stunning increase proves the homeless camping ordinance is acting as a magnet for homeless individuals to come to Austin.

Our coalition is more committed than ever to reinstate the ban on public camping to restore public safety and public health for our city.

On Friday, KVUE's Molly Oak reported on the increase in tents being used by homeless individuals across the city.

We must stop this madness.

In late February our coalition released an ordinance that would reinstate the ban on homeless camping citywide, restore the sit/lie ordinance to downtown and extends it to the UT campus and surrounding area, and ban panhandling at night citywide from 7pm-7am.

Entirely volunteer-led and nonpartisan, our effort recently surpassed 5,000 signatures toward the 20,000 needed by July 18 to qualify for the November ballot.

We need your help.
