Stop Euthanizing Animals in the care of Animal Services

The Issue

So far in 2012 Arlington has killed or "put down" 113 dogs and cats in their care. They can be seen here:  http://imgur.com/a/MLex8

Instead of pouring funds into killing healthy animals we would like to see the city use the funds to spay / neuter the animals and find them a home. The city should also develop an animal education series for all school children teaching them responsible pet ownership throughout public school experience. Combined this will cut down on pet overpopulation and the expenses incurred by the city Animal Services.

Most often animals that enter the shelter do so due to neglect from their owners, not from something the animal has done. They can have any range of illnesses and health conditions including manage, parvo, heartworms, tumors, and malnutrition. After the neglect of bad pet owners these pets are then barely cared for and disposed of by means of lethal injection if there is not enough interest in adopting them.

Frequently animals in danger of being euthanized have money pledged to them by residents for care, however, these funds are not allowed to be used to keep the animal from being killed or for veterinary care until the animal is adopted. If the city allowed donations for specific care it would increase the adoptability of many pets that have medical issues.

Please sign this petition to help stop the unnecessary killing of animals we call our 'best friends' and instead encourage the city of Arlington Texas to find workable solutions that help cut down on the overpopulation of animals, increase the adoption rate, and educate our kids on taking care of pets.
