Drainage Nets for Rivers in the Philippines

The Issue

Drainage Nets for Rivers in the Philippines

A Petition to Have Drainage Nets to Collect Floating Waste in Rivers

Water is considered an essential for humans, animals, and plants too. It is a must to have water to be able to live as it is used to drink, to bathe and other purposes. However, there are bodies of water in the Philippines that are filled with garbage and debris that pollutes the water. This then questions the manifesting conformity of a clean and safe environment as it rejects the sustainability of water to not only humans but also animals that supposedly live in those waters.

Statistics

There are a number of factors that results in polluted bodies of water, one would be having no proper disposal of garbage especially to those who live near or just above creeks and rivers. Philippines is also named a natural disaster hot-spot with approximately 50.3% of its total area and 81.3% of its population vulnerable to natural disasters (World Bank, 2008) meaning to say, as the country is susceptible to floods and storms during those disasters, the tendency of wastes to go to rivers are extremely high and more than often.

The following are consequences of abundant garbage in bodies of water

×          water remains polluted

×          possibly, there will come a time that there are no more animals in the water

×          less chances of having drinking water as the water will take an extensive amount of time to treat because of the trashes

×          it can also affect the air as it the odor affects the atmosphere around

This petition would be under environmental justice. The community and government will work hand-in-hand to address the ongoing environmental issue which is water pollution. The community would be suggesting and implementing whilst the government approves and gives funds to resolve the problem. To be able to establish this petition would result in an efficient way collecting wastes in rivers. This gives way to a clean and less polluted environment, also making the water able to be treated easily in such a way that soon, with technology rising, it can become drinking water.

To impose this petition means that there will be drainage nets under bridges in rivers that would collect wastes. As common knowledge, water flows and brings whatever solid material there is making it go to the drainage net, then it is to be collected by the people and disposed properly.

The uprising issue of water sustainability and pollution continuous until today, as an individual who sees this issue, simple things like this petition could help a lot. The money of the people may seem like a far stretch; the future at least would not have to be far fetched. Some rivers of Australia have already done this movement, placing drainage nets to collect garbage, and it has been of great impact to their waters. It is now time that the Philippines does the same, it may be small but it can assure a future that is big. This is just one step to a bigger one as innovation rises, there will be more and more ideas in the future but the least we can do to our water today is to let it not be polluted.
