My neighbors reported me to the city of Wheeling for having a pit bull. I have a pit mix that I adopted 3 years ago. She is an inside dog and does not run loose. She is always leashed when outside and does not cause any risks of harm to my neighborhood. 
The report caused me to get hit with a $562 citation for failing to register a “vicious” dog. I didn’t know about the ordinance, and now that it’s come to light, I’m also having a hard time finding $100,000 liability insurance for my dog. I have to keep her muzzled at all times if outside. I have to construct a 6foot fence. I also have to register this innocent pet as vicious. I have to go to court to appeal the citation I received while being a responsible dog owner. The requirements of the Wheeling dog ordinance are unfair and unjust to responsible pet owners and to the pit bull-like dogs who need adopted from the shelter or those that are currently living comfortably at home with their owners like ANY OTHER BREED OF DOG. I am 38 years old and every dog bite I’ve ever known about, heard of, or actually witnessed were by non-pitbull dogs. The dog ordinance is upsetting my happy home as well as others in my city. Any dog can be aggressive. This unfairness leads to pets being given up because the owner can’t afford the costs associated with the ordinance requirements, being repeatedly cited, and having to comply with absurd rules. Pitbulls don’t deserve this and neither do their owners. BAN THE DOG ORDINANCE!!
