Urgent chlorination of water in karachi

The Issue

2 recent cases of death due to primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused be Naegleria fowleri, are being reported in karachi. One of them was a middle aged neurosurgeon who didn't report any swimming history, whereas the other victim who was a kid had swimming history. The concerned history shows irrespective of the source of contaminated water, ameba claimed both victims. The total number of death this year is 4 due to this parasite.

Since there is no cure for PAM, the only solution currently available is mass chlorination of water sources available to public. As chlorination is an important step after flooding to prevent waterborne infections, and we are having monsoon season around the corner, this makes disinfection of water an ideal step we need, to prevent more deaths.

On individual basis, although, people can start disinfecting water but this will not help whole community, and underprivileged areas where there is lack of basic knowledge about such measures, will not be secured. On this ground, I urge city government/local authorities and concerned organizations to look into this matter and take urgent steps to disinfect water, and ensure that their orders are being executed in each and every area.
