For years, the people and animals of Greenwood county have needed (and requested) a new building for the Greenwood County Humane Society. The building in which they currently function is dilapidated, unsanitary, and in a condemnable state of disrepair. As a former volunteer, I've seen evidence of this for years. No matter how hard the staff tries, it cannot be fixed internally. The building is ancient, there is no denying it. There is never enough space for the volume of animals taken in, resulting in hundreds of euthanasias each month. This new building would enrich and save literal thousands of lives every year. It was scheduled to be built more than 5 years ago. However, every year, the Greenwood County and City councils decide it is not important enough. Every year, the plans for the building are made smaller, and more restrictive, and even then postponed another year. From what the plan was years ago, the new space is now almost half its initial size. This building would cost Greenwood County about $5 million dollars, which they do not wish to spend. They continually cut it from their budget to make room for other things. What was it cut for this year? Beautifying downtown. The Council of Greenwood plans to spend more than $17 million “beautifying” Greenwood. Among other reckless spending habits, Greenwood has sacrificed it's animal welfare this year for topiaries, statues, fountains, and prettier sidewalks.
