After months of petitioning Ashland city council we finally had our day. Councilors put the letter on the agenda. People packed the council chambers in support and sadly, some agianst the letter. The blatant hate from our local Zionists like Rabbi David was expected, but seemed to put fear into the hearts of the councilors and all of them present voted no on signing the letter as "ashland city council"
The most appalling person to speak agianst the letter was Emily Simon, who is Chair of Ashlands Social Equity and Racial Justice Committee. How can someone oppose a stop to genocide who sits as chair on a committee like that? Its gross.
Mayor Tonya stood in her previous supporting words and said she would send the letter as the mayor. I sent a letter to all the councilors after the meeting to ask them why they voted agianst it. Telling them that they had brough shame to our county and many residents who are begging our local government not stay silent through this genocide.
I received an email back from 1 councilor who was not present at the meeting, Dylan Bloom saying quote " i watched from home and am dismayed and quite frankly insulted by the accusations of those in opposition to the letter." He also said " i hope this clarifies my position. One that i have no problem being public about"
We must keep the pressure on the city councils in jackson county to approve letters and resolutions. As of now the number of city councils to create such things are at approx 80. The more that join in, the more pressure gets put on our representatives and congress people to act according to the wishes of their constituents. Check here for updates and reach out to locals speaking up for a ceasefire for more calls to action. See you all out there.
