Withdraw Resolution 514! No vouchers in Atlantic City!
The Issue
Atlantic City Councilman, Jesse Kurtz has filed a resolution with the Atlantic County Clerk’s office for a non-binding referendum to make two changes that would greatly effect the Atlantic City School system, as well as have potential to facilitate change across the state. The resolution would allow Atlantic City to institute a school voucher and home school tax credit program for Atlantic City residents that have children enrolled in the public education system. The enactment of this provision for Atlantic City, even though it is listed as non-binding, has potential to set precedent in our state, where school vouchers have already been deemed to be unacceptable.
The passage of this resolution would do more than just provide a inconsequential tax benefit to these residents. This resolution would actually serve to siphon off more funds to an already greatly underfunded district. State aid that the Atlantic City School District is eligible to receive would also be taken away from the district, causing an even greater financial loss, reduction of programs, and denial of services. Education is a public endeavor that should be the responsibility of all citizens to participate in the provision of such for future generations.
We demand that you withdraw the resolution filed on August 19th to add a non-binding referendum to the November ballot that would allow school vouchers and tax credits for families that homeschool their children. An enactment of such would siphon off monies from an already financially-strapped district in a city that should be unifying to support and rebuild community organizations.
As a representative of Atlantic City, we ask you to consider your responsibility to building the foundational community bases that have long been ignored in the future planning of the revitalization of the city. Allowing the Atlantic City Public School system to operate at an even greater financial deficit is an act that directly contradicts your responsibilities to the people that elected you to represent them in their best interest.
