Without a local animal control in Alton dogs with go through Madison County which is already overcrowded. Police will be allowed to shoot dogs they feel are being aggressive or that growl. Leash laws won't be enforced, dogs will roam the streets, overpopulation of dogs and cats in Alton.

For the past two years, one man has been doing the job of three. Our current Animal Control Officer works very hard to reunite lost pets with their owners. He has been a huge asset for low cost shot clinics, helping to market the low cost spay and neuter options. In cases when the owner cannot be found, he allows local rescues to pull animals, ensuring vetting, safety, and fresh starts for these unclaimed pets. He is overwhelmed and under budgeted.  With his presence in the city, the numbers have dramatically decreased and people are more conscious of their responsibilities as pet owners. There are irresponsible pet owners and responsible ones where accidents happen and their animal becomes lost. Our current Animal Control Officer does more than the average officer to help reunite these families. He also is in charge of nuisance animal removal. This is the removal of animals that can spread diseases and destroy property.
