City Council and Mayor of Norman, Oklahoma, USA: Legalize swine (pigs) below a certain lb. limit as domestic household pets

The Issue

The current Norman, OK city ordinance which prohibits the keeping of swine within city limits (except within areas zoned for agriculture) is outdated and needs to be changed.

The pet Vietnamese Potbellied Pig, which normally reaches its adulthood at a size of 70-150 lbs., was first introduced to the United States in the early 1980s. The pet ownership ordinances of most towns and cities (including Norman) were written and adopted prior to the 1980s, when the only swine within the United States were farm hogs and feral pigs, who can grow up to 1,500 lbs. or more. Further, the city of Moore, OK, which borders Norman, has already legalized swine ownership. Additionally, pigs are the fourth most intelligent creature in the entire animal kingdom, and have a far greater intelligence than the average dog. The domestic (pet) porcine ownership laws within the city of Norman should mirror its laws pertaining to canine (dog) ownership.

Norman's current swine-related ordinances are out of date and need to be changed.
