Saving our Local Indonesian Fruits from Extinction

Background
Written by (Shira Edina Kolawidjaya1)
Indonesia is a tropical country that is blessed with fertile soil so that Indonesia has a wide variety of biological resources, including fruit plants. Along with the changing times and the increasing population, the need for land is getting higher, both for housing, industrial infrastructure, and urban areas. Of course, this results in less land for local fruit plants to grow. Even though these local fruits are very useful for the health of the human body because they contain many vitamins needed by the human body. Given the importance of these local fruits for human life, the existence of these local fruit plants must be preserved so that generations of our children and grandchildren can get to know these local fruit plants.

The Problem
Written by(Sheldy Stacia. M. G2)
Most of us sure loves fruits, I mean who doesn’t? But have any of the kids from this generation knows any of our local fruits? I bet we could name one or two fruits that maybe this generation (including us) knows, for example, salak(thorny palm), rambutan(rambutan),jeruk bali(pomelo), etc. Those fruits were known for many years, but how about other locals fruits that maybe most of us didn’t realize that it exist. What happened to those local fruits and what kind of problem that makes them unknown to our generation? Nowadays most of us are introduced to imported fruits such as kiwi, dragon fruit, grape, etc. According to my opinion the problem is that nowadays technology has been growing rapidly so most of the fruit in the market are the imported fruits and what happens to the local fruits? Some of our local fruits exported to other countries and most of the local fruits that are known by this generation still could be found at the traditional market around Indonesia.

The Impact
Written by (Teguh El Noble Joel Lingg3)
Every act has an impact to someone or something, so as this problem. The fruit extinction may cause an economical difficulty to fruit business and since people consume less fruit than snacks like chips and biscuit, farmers who farm the fruits will lose their jobs.  If this happens, the production of fruits will decrease. Most business converts land into industrial area and factories. This will destroy its elements for planting which will decrease the germplasm. This may cause our country that was rich with fruits gone, and destroy our fruit diversity thanks to industrial land conversion. There are still many impacts than the one that is written.

Our suggestion
Written by (Raditya Pranadipa4)
Our suggestion to the Local Indonesian Fruits from Extinction are to save them and plant them daily. We must also overcome the usage of the fruits from our daily lives. For example, we must not try to over-use it too much for food, we must use it wisely, carefully and perfectly balance, because of that, we will still have plenty enough of fruits to plant and use. Another way for us to protect our local fruits from extinction are to keep the environment around us clean like throwing the garbage at the right place, pick up trashes and use less pollution this way the fruits can grow even more safer from anything harmful.
