Remove the Statue in Bailey Park
The Issue
This is a statue that is carved in the image of a Confederate soldier. According to a book that captures historic moments in Humboldt, Tn, the statue, which was assembled in the summer of 1914, was a gift from the United Daughters of Confederacy. The Confederate Army, fought to uphold separation from the Union and to continue slavery. This statue was created in commemoration to those who fought on the behalf of the Confederacy, and represented their principles. This petition is not to stir controversy, cause separation, nor to antagonize southern pride, but rather to highlight what our city should stand on: Unity. What is the purpose of having a statue that honors racism, hate, turmoil, oppression, and discord amongst the diverse population that is present here in Humboldt? Let's join together to make a statement that we are a town that models peace, love, and unity. Let's petition to remove this statue.
