DEMONSTRATE SUPPORT OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT MARYELLEN ELIA
This petition had 1,188 supporters
To ensure that Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) retains its world class Superintendent who has brought national prominence and recognition to the community, and reject the School Board’s misguided proposal to terminate her from the position without just cause.
Superintendent MaryEllen Elia oversees the eighth largest school district in the nation with 203,000 students, 26,000 employees, including 16,000 teachers, and an annual budget of $2.8 billion.
Despite its size, HCPS has received the highest credit rating (Moody's, Aa2; Standard & Poors, AA; Fitch; AA) of any Florida school district and has won the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association every year she's served in office.
In a one-year period, Superintendent Elia has been selected as Florida’s Superintendent of the Year, awarded the Florida Excellence in Education Award from the Florida AdvanceED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement and is currently a nominee for National Superintendent of the Year.
When news of the School Board’s plan spread this week, many within the community, including Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Representative Dana Young and countless other local leaders, voiced their support of Hillsborough’s schools leader.
Under Superintendent Elia’s tenure, the district has achieved the following:
*Hillsborough County’s 4th and 8th graders have led all 22 participating urban districts (Chicago, Boston, Houston, Charlotte, etc.) in the landmark Trial Urban District Assessment reading test, administered by the National Assessment of Education Progress, commonly known as The Nation’s Report Card.
*Hillsborough County Public Schools led the state in the number of National Merit Semifinalists in 2014, with 67 students earning the honor.
*Local students now rank fourth nationally in the percentage of students scoring a three or higher on AP exams and lead the nation in the percentage of students taking AP exams while in high school.
*The district has joined a national network of partners with the overall goal of developing and training 100,000 excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers by 2021. HCPS is the only school district in Florida and one of only seven school districts across the nation chosen to participate.
*The HCPS has an impressive record of public/private partnerships, working with the community and foundations (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wallace Foundation, Moffitt Cancer Center, National Geographic) that help offset the cost of implementing innovative programs and initiatives.
We encourage you to show your support for the retention of Superintendent MaryEllen Elia as Hillsborough County Public School’s leader and reject the School Board’s proposal to unjustly terminate her from office by signing this petition and attending the school board meeting scheduled for January 20, 2015 at 2:45p.m. at the Hillsborough County School District office - 901 East Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa, Florida 33602
