Legalize Sugar Gliders as Pets in California

The Issue

I believe as a citizen of California, I should be able to own a sugar glider. Sugar gliders are a type of marsupial closely related to koala bears that live in Australia. Unlike flying squirrels, which it is sometimes confused with, sugar gliders don’t carry harmful diseases like rabies, and have a very complex diet. Sugar gliders make great companions and form very quick bonds with their owners, but must be kept in groups of at least 2.  If they escaped from a house hold, they would not be a threat to native species, because they cannot survive in our climate, for it is very different from Australia’s. We need the governor of California to see this, so we can make a change and solve this problem.  I personally have sent multiple essays to the government of California about this issue, and now I need your help to solve it.  Let’s try to get 100 signatures in the first month, and 1,000 by the third. I know if I have your support we can make sugar gliders legal.  I have done extensive research, and as far as I can tell, they pose no threat to society or the environment. If you agree with me, sign this petition and send a letter to Gavin Newsom himself, and show him we need this problem fixed.  I appreciate you taking your time to read and sign this petition, and every donation goes a long way. Thank you.

The facts:

- All the states surrounding California have legalized sugar gliders, so banning them here is impractical.

-In the surrounding states with similar climates, you never here about Sugar Glider outbreaks, because they cannot survive for long in this climate.

- Sugar gliders make great pets for night owls, people in apartments, people who don’t have the time for a dog or cat, and people in wheelchairs.

-They form tight bonds with their owners.
