Why this petition matters

Zimbabwe has the second-largest population of wild eledphants after neighboring Botswana. These beautiful animals are going to be killed to decrease the number of "dangerous human-elephant interactions." What people do not realise is that, as long as you do not bother, threaten, or instigate, an elephant will go on its way. It will not harm you. These creatures are intelligent in so many ways. They have a long term memory. They remember individual human beings. They remember and know their own kind. They have social memory to which they remember other herd of elephants. They have an ecological memory meaning that they remember where to find water, where to find food, and how to adjust their routes due to human settlements. They are able to tell the difference between a person who poses a threat and who doesn't. They use tools to accomplish tasks. They have empathy, something that a lot of humans do not. Lastly, they have an understanding of death. In fact, they even have something called an "elephant graveyard" where they carry the bones of the dead and grieve them with the rest of the herd. Elephants are known to be as smart as dolphins. These creatures deserve to live their lives in peace. Let's help stop the mass killing from happening.
