When teenagers are sleep deprived, they are not performing at their best. The American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Sleep Foundation, the National PTA, and 12 other national assocations support start times no earlier than 8:30 am for middle schools and high schools. Why? Teens are biologically programmed to fall asleep LATER at night than younger kids and adults. Earlier school start times put teens at greater risk for mental and physical health disorders, concussions, car accidents, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and lower overall performance. Let's join other districts in CT and across the country in moving to 8:30 am start times for Hillcrest, Madison, and Trumbull High School.
