WHAT:
Amazon is trying to build a mega-distribution center/warehouse in Churchill Borough, a small residential community of 3000 people just east of Pittsburgh. The residents are up in arms and fighting back. (See www.churchillfuture.com for more information.)
Not only does Amazon not care about their employees, the company appears to have no conscience when it comes to planning to destroy a beautiful 133 acre hilly green space--once the home of Westinghouse Research and Development Center--by hiring Hillwood Development to level it and destroy 1400 mature trees to erect a 4.5 story, approx. 3 million square foot warehouse. The property is currently a natural wildlife refuge and has a historic Native American trail--Raystown Path--that runs through it. The site is surrounded by homes and three schools, and such development would expose residents and students to hazardous pollutants--made worse by the tree loss--from 300-400 semi-tractor trailer trucks entering and exiting the facility 24/7, 365 days/year, and idling on local roads. Flooding of nearby homes and roads, noise, lights, traffic congestion, accidents, and road damage will be a nightmare.

While Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald touts jobs in the eastern suburbs from this development, these jobs are temporary, as Amazon plans to replace humans with automation and robots in their warehouses over the next ten years.
