Church st and Broadway Pedestrian Safety Measures

Church st and Broadway Pedestrian Safety Measures
The Issue
On October 20, 2022 every parents' worst nightmare came far to close to a reality. A child was struck by a car walking to school while crossing the busy intersection of Broadway and Church St. in South Portland.
Broadway sees 13,200 cars daily according to the 2018 Smart Corridor Study
Residents around the Church St intersection have witnessed at least a dozen to two dozen pedestrians crossing Broadway each day. Ages range from children to elderly adults.
We need a flashing cross walk with visibility from the Stout and Broadway intersection. Children walk and bike to school in our quaint town and we need to provide safer streets now.
We are asking the City of South Portland to assess the intersection of Church St and Broadway to determine the best approach to installing a crosswalk with ample lighting and signage. We need the City of South Portland to act now before another South Portlander becomes a victim.
With better street safety measures we can all enjoy our community knowing our residents are protected from future traffic accidents.
