Independent MLA Vicki Huntington has released freedom-of-information documents that show the provincial government’s controversial changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) in 2014 were intended to decrease the independence of the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), which the government believed was too focused on protecting farmland. “The government has repeatedly stated that changes to the ALR would not affect the independence of the ALC. These documents show that behind closed doors, they were looking for ways to bring the ALC in line,” Huntington said.
