Introduce Legislation to Protect Michigan Residents from Being Exploited through Court-Appointed Guardianships

Introduce Legislation to Protect Michigan Residents from Being Exploited through Court-Appointed Guardianships
The Issue
A bill in the Ohio House of Representatives’ new Community & Family Advancement Committee would provide a start toward addressing two tragic problems: people under guardianship care who are exploited, neglected or abused by their guardians, and young people who “age out” of their foster homes with no experience or family support to help them become self-supporting adults.
House Bill 50, cosponsored by Republican Reps. Cheryl Grossman of Grove City and Dorothy Pelanda of Marysville, would, among other things, establish standards of conduct for legal guardians and provide funds for former foster children to continue receiving help and guidance to age 21. You can read a recent editorial from the online version of the Columbus Dispatch newspaper here.
We are petitioning you to introduce similar legislation so that the people of Michigan do NOT have to wait any longer to be protected from any possible exploitation from court-appointed guardianships.
