On February 28, 2018, college graduate, Hakeem Griffin was brutally murdered by a childhood "friend" in a senseless, meaningless, and extreme act of violence on the corner of 97th St and 57th Ave. Hakeem and his siblings were raised in Lefrak City and have walked up and down that street thousands of times. There have been numerous memories made on that corner, unfortunately this is the most significant one. This event was surprising, disturbing, and tragic to the community and paid a heavy toll on his family and close friends. Hakeem's life is a symbol of hope and potential. His numerous accomplishments and unbreakable bond with members of the community have proven that with determination and persistence you can change your life around for the better. Hakeem's family would like to put a street sign on that corner of 97th St and 57th Ave in remembrance of him and his impact on Lefrak while ensuring that his name lives on. Hakeem's life will be one to emulate for both present and future generations of Lefrak City and surrounding communities. In order to make this happen, Hakeem's biography needs to be presented to the District Manager, to the District Board, and to the City Board. It is important that we prove Hakeem's life was significant to the community and that he receives such recognition. We are asking you to sign this petition to show support for our cause to get that sign put up. Help us make Hakeem's name live on!
