As a child, I remember seeing trucks crammed full of chickens, wings protruding through the bars as they were so tightly packed in together. When I was young this sight made me cry more than once as I imagined the terrible lives that these hens would be living, the horrible places they had been and where they would end up.
In the UK a change.org petition recently convinced Tesco, one of the biggest supermarket chains in the country, to stop selling eggs from caged and barn hens. This was an amazing achievement and something that New Zealand needs to take note of. Every time I go to a supermarket and see caged or barn eggs for sale my heart aches for the animals that have suffered for people to buy cheap, nutritionless eggs.
Even the NZ government has acknowledged that this is not ok and has pledged to make battery farming hens illegal by 2022. That is still 5 years away, and even when the law passes barn-farming hens will still be allowed which isn't honestly much better.
Barn-farmed hens are kept in large overcrowded sheds with seven birds kept per square metre. To reduce aggression and cannibalism, barn hens are often kept in dimmed lighting and usually have their beaks trimmed. Not nice.
Foodstuffs is one of New Zealand's biggest grocery distributors and supplies the PAK'nSAVE, New World, Four Square Supermarkets, Henry's Beer Wine and Spirits, and On the Spot convenience stores.
If Foodstuff stopped supplying cage and barn eggs to its stores it would drastically help to reduce the number of hens who spend their lives in cages and barns. It would also send a message to other supermarkets that this is an option that is realistic, achievable and required.
Globally companies such as Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencers and Waitrose stopped selling eggs from caged hens years ago. Even Mcdonald’s UK listened to the public and responded to a petition and agreed to stop using eggs from caged and barn kept hens. Phasing out caged and barn eggs isn’t going to be easy, but if Foodstuffs can show some good faith and lead the way in doing the right thing by the animals who make them money it would be a huge step to eventually ending cages and barns in the commercial egg farming industry.
Please sign this petition, share it in your networks and take the first steps towards creating happier lives for New Zealand hens.
