Please sign the New Home Fire Safety Act
Both the New Jersey Assembly and Senate have passed a bill that would require the installation of fire sprinklers in newly constructed one- and two-family homes. The legislation awaits a signature from Governor Chris Christie. Safety advocates are urging the governor to sign this important piece of legislation.
Why is this bill's passage so crucial? Home is where the majority of fire deaths occur in the U.S. On average, 2,500 people die every year in home fires. Since New Jersey experiences roughly 60 fire deaths and more than $25 million in estimated property damage each year, fire continues to have a devastating impact on the Garden State.
The technology to eliminate these losses exists. Home fire sprinklers have been proven to reduce a person's risk of dying in a fire by an astounding 80 percent, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
The New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Coalition, a partnership of local advocates who support the installation of sprinklers in new homes, has developed a petition asking Governor Christie to support the New Home Fire Safety Act. Since home fire sprinklers are a cost-effective approach to fire safety, these devices should not be viewed as an optional component to new homes. In fact, all national building codes include a requirement to sprinkler these dwellings. New Jersey should not deviate from these requirements, set forth by experienced and qualified safety professionals.
California and Maryland have witnessed the benefits of enacting statewide, sprinkler requirements. The passage of the New Home Fire Safety Act will also place New Jersey at the forefront of fire safety. Governor Christie’s signature has the ability to save lives, save millions of dollars in property damage, and protect the state's emergency responders from the damaging effects of fire.
Please sign the petition today and urge Governor Christie to support the sprinkler bill. Let's make history in New Jersey.
