Choose Filipinos: A Petition to Stop Colonial Mentality in the Philippines
The Issue
The rich history of the Philippines has been deeply shaped by centuries of foreign colonization, leaving a lasting imprint on our culture and values. Even today, we tend to gravitate toward foreign influences, often prioritizing the adoption of their traditions over the preservation and growth of our own.
Research shows that colonial mentality manifests in several ways that continue to impact Filipino society:
- PREFERENCE FOR FOREIGN PRODUCTS AND CULTURE: Filipinos may show a preference for imported goods, foreign languages, and Western beauty standards, often devaluing their own cultural heritage. A 2018 Kantar Worldpanel study revealed that Filipinos overwhelmingly choose global brands, with 72% of top purchases being foreign, leaving only 28% for local products, thus devaluing our local industries.
- SKIN-COLOR HIERARCHY: A preference for lighter skin tones, influenced by colonial beauty standards, can lead to colorism and self-esteem issues. Throughout the years, several studies consistently point to the historical influence of Spanish and American colonization as a major factor in the development of the skin-color hierarchy. Darker skin became associated with manual labor and lower social status, while lighter skin was linked to the colonizers and the elite.
- DESIRE FOR EMIGRATION AND BRAIN DRAIN: Some Filipinos may harbor a desire to leave the Philippines, seeking opportunities and a better life in foreign countries, potentially stemming from a sense of inferiority. Also, the Philippines faces a critical loss of skilled workers due to emigration. In 2024, approximately 2.47 million Filipinos left to work overseas, exceeding the previous year's estimates, highlighting a continued and escalating trend of brain drain.
- TOLERATING OR MINIMIZING HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY OPPRESSION: Some Filipinos may accept or downplay historical and current injustices against Filipinos because they see it as the price of civilization or progress. This happens because feelings of inferiority have been deeply ingrained in some Filipinos.
In today’s society, Filipino culture is at risk of fading, erasing the vibrant colors of our traditions with foreign influences. It has been over a century since the Philippines gained independence, yet the effects of colonialism remain ingrained in Filipino society. Therefore, it is essential to reclaim and promote our cultural identity. Local research emphasizes that cultural identity is the fundamental source of social participation, development, and empowerment, and its loss leads to a disunited, self-serving, and short-sighted society.
Furthermore, renowned Filipino nationalist Claro Recto stated that "Nationalism is the natural antagonist of colonialism." This reinforces the need to actively resist the lingering effects of our colonial past. The younger generation must be educated to value and preserve Filipino traditions. Likewise, the older generations should reinforce this cultural pride to ensure its continuity. We must protect the rich tapestry of Filipino culture and stop the cycle of colonial mentality.
Our culture stands as a testament to our history and resilience — it is time to protect it and take pride in our Filipino identity.
We, as Filipinos, have the power to reclaim our identity. We urge you to take a stand and embrace our Filipino heritage.
