Remove Dey and Shanahan as Life Trustees

We, the undersigned alumni of Choate Rosemary Hall, write to the Board of Trustees in response to the recently released independent investigation by Covington & Burling. For the reasons stated below, we ask the Board to act promptly in removing Charles Dey and Edward Shanahan as Life Trustees.
We commend this Board and current Headmaster Alex Curtis for seeking an independent investigation and transparently publishing the results to the Choate community and the public at large.
This independent investigation unearthed a failure of leadership over decades - a failure that sits squarely on the shoulders of the men running Choate Rosemary Hall. Indeed, the investigation shows that Headmasters Dey and Shanahan repeatedly handled allegations of sexual misconduct quietly and internally, allowing perpetrators to stay at Choate despite past misdeeds; move on to other schools with no warning to the students and families of those institutions; and in some cases, avoid criminal responsibility for their acts. It is hardly surprising that misconduct persisted for decades given the administration’s repeated tepid responses to serious allegations.
The Trustees asked for this investigation in an effort to fully acknowledge the past and to move forward into a different future. We share this goal.
For this reason, it is simply not tenable to maintain the Life Trustee designation for Charles Dey and Edward Shanahan. As long as their names are associated with Choate, the institution remains tarnished.
We respectfully demand that the Board take action at its next meeting to remove the Life Trustee designation from former Headmasters Dey and Shanahan and look forward to your response.
