The health of a nation is depend on the children we raise. Children need all their needs provided for by those entrusted in their upbringing. The constitution of Kenya has fully provided for the rights of the children and a children act has explained clearly how those rights should be met.
This is a call to the government and stakeholders to ensure the children rights are adhered to to the letter.
Unfortunately, this is not the case as those responsible have abscorded their duties. Naturally, all children have 2 parents. It's becoming a trend that some parents have left their roles to one parent and move on like the children don't exist regardless of what the constitution and children act provide for. They do not fear the laid down laws and most time, the law is actually linient on them.
This is a multisectoral problem that needs all players to take position. From the law makers providing for stringest measures to employers ensuring that all their employees are responsible if they have children.
It's workable. Let the government link all players and close gaps that many use to hide from their duties. This includes having agreement with foreign countries on child maintenance as well as ensuring that only those who adhere to their responsibilities get services.
Every adult person should be made to declare their responsibilities. This way, there would be no complaints of irresponsible parents. Make people accountable and the world will be a better place for our children. Let's raise children who are happy when they see efforts made by their guardians.
Finally, the law should make it easier for the agrieved parties to report such issues of irresponsibility without intimidation, knowing well that they will get assistance. Many have to struggle alone for fear of intimidation even threats, and leniency of our laws for those who don't comply. It's a humbling experience when you report a complaint but the defendant laughs at you that you have done nothing because they will only get jailed for 5 days and there is nothing else you can do. Make it a serious crime that when it's mentioned, one will think twice about neglecting their children.
Let's work towards raising happy and all rounded children for a better happy nation
