Create ways to lets teens change their name without their parent or guardian's consent.
The Issue
Now in 2023, there are many students and teenagers coming out as transgender and wanting to change their name to something more representative of their gender. But there are many parents who don’t accept their children’s identity and don’t allow their child to change their names. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, 1.6 million of the US population consist of transgender people. Out of the 1.6 million, 300 thousand are youth who are below 17 and the remaining 1.3 million are adults. We all know that many people disapprove of transgender people, which causes bullying and harassment in schools and society. And it's not just other students and teens, some adults and guardians of transgender teens also aren’t too happy with their child being transgender leading to disagreements about their gender and changing their names and appearance to match their child’s desired gender. A teenager cannot change their name legally if their parents or guardians consent to the name change, therefore the child will have to wait until they grow up to age 18 until they can officially change their name. Massachusetts should make other ways for children to change their name without their parent’s consent so they don’t have to live with a name they don’t desire until they are 18. Because by age 18, many important documents like school diplomas and transcripts will have their given name on them because it is their legal name and not the one they want.
