This is a petition focusing on the issue of the CCTV cameras installed in the GIrl's hostel. Security is very important and a vital part of hostel security. We as students understand the need of installing CCTV cameras at entry and exit points of the hostel to ensure prevention of breaking and entering or unwanted persons entering our hostel. But what we are bringing up is the unnecessary CCTVs installed in the corridors on every floor of the girl's hostels. There are also multiple cameras that don't face the corridor but inside our rooms! There are multiple cameras that face directly inside the girl's rooms which is a clear invasion of our privacy. Our hostel rooms are meant to be a safe space and somewhere we can enjoy our privacy. These CCTV cameras have a direct view of the inside of rooms. According to Indian IT Law, 2000 unconsented taping of males or females is a punishable offence of three years imprisonment and a fine of two lakhs. None of us have consented to such violation of privacy. Signing the petition will ensure that we get back our privacy. We have no knowledge of who is monitoring the surveillance cameras and this makes us feel especially unsafe especially at night when the girls are in comfortable clothing. We aren't asking to remove every camera. We are consenting to installing cameras near the gate, which is the point of maximum entry and exit, the biometric attendance and the guard's seating area. This is a peaceful request from the students in the girls hostel. We're filing a petition directly to the chief warden and also to the President of Manipal University Jaipur to ensure the protection of our right to privacy. Ignoring this will only motivate us to solve the issue by taking up the issue in our own hands.
