To introduce new train services between Mangalore and Chennai

The Issue

The number of Malayalis from Northern Kerala residing in Chennai is large. Be it students or working class – we can find over 50,000 people from Northern Kerala travelling to Chennai every month. This petition is all about the traveling woes of people who hails from Malabar side and travels from Chennai or vice versa. There are 4 direct trains from Chennai to Mangalore. Out of this, two trains run in the 'odd hours' or to be specific not in the peak hours. One is the West Coast Express that starts from Chennai Central at 11.30 am. This train reaches Calicut in the midnight. Most of the passengers will not opt for this train until and unless they are in some hurry. For ladies who are traveling alone, this train is not a good option. Another train is Chennai Mangalore Express that starts at 10 pm from Chennai and will reach Calicut next day 5 pm. Who will be ready to travel 17 hours to North Kerala?

Northern Kerala comprises 6 districts – Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayand, Kannur and Kasargod. The passengers from Mangalore also largely depend on these trains. Leave Palakkad because the trains that go to Trivandrum side will cater to the needs of the people from the district. Umpteen people travel from Chennai to these districts and vice versa. Passengers mostly depend on the 2 trains that run in the peak hours and not in the other 2 that run in the odd hours.

Comparing to the trains that run towards Trivandrum side, the number of trains towards Mangalore side is less. Through this petition I would like to address traveling woes of passengers to the Malabar side from Chennai. This petition is a collective call to railway authorities to take an appropriate action.

Recently, the doubling works in the Shoranur-Mangalore stretch were completed and the electrification works also would be undertaken in the near future. This facilitates introduction of new train services between Mangalore and Chennai or at least connection trains to ones running in the Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai route.

Support and join me in this small initiative.
