The Issue

In demand of declaring Ward No. 19, 33, 34 & 35 Under South Dum Dum Municipality, 24 Parganas (North), West Bengal as HOTSPOT FOR COVID 19

With every day rising new novel coronavirus cases crossing 10000 individuals active cases and more than 300 deaths, India has decided to widen the ambit of testing for Covid-19 among symptomatic people in hotspots identified by the state governments. While the nation is heading towards the extension of Lock Down period till 3rd may 2020 after 21-day lockdown period, more and more states are announcing Covid-19 hotspots with affected districts. These hotspots are being sealed and sanitised along with door-to-door screening for symptoms.

ICMR, which earlier allowed testing of symptomatic people with international travel history or contact history, has now widened the ambit to include residents of hotspots to check any possible community transmission in areas where positive cases have been reported.

So far, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana's Gurugram, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Kerala have identified and sealed Covid-19 containment zones. Bengal has also assembled a committee to identify similar hotspots.

It is now evident that Bengal is also suffering with rising number of active 120 cases with deaths of 7 as of 14.04.2020. Unfortunately, we the residents of Ward No. 19, 33, 34 & 35 under the jurisdiction of Lake Town Police Station (Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate) attached under South Dum Dum Municipality has also experienced approximately 10 cases under the category of Covid-19 in last 7 days. It is assumed that those patients were taken to quarantine centers or hospitals. However it is also evident that the administration has also shown much leniency to maintain strict lock down protocols in last two weeks. As a result most of the markets like Patipukur Fish & General Market, Sreebhumi Market, Dakshindari Market & S.K. Deb Road Market remained open where thousands of people freely roaming without maintaining social distancing. It is further pertinent to mention herein that the residential buildings are not accurately sanitized and further neither the buildings or areas were not sealed not the other next door residents were tested for Covid-19. Under such inattentive attitudes of the local administration we the residents demand for as below:

  1. Declare Ward No. 19, 33, 34 & 35 under the jurisdiction of Lake Town Police Station as HOTSPOTS or RESTRICTED ZONES.
  2. Seal & sanitize the entire area specially the residential building and shops very near (50 mtrs) to the cases reported.
  3. Conduct Covid-19 tests for the residents of the building where the cases are reported.

In view of the aforesaid we all humbly pray before all the concerned authorities to consider the critical situation in the mentioned area and take every steps to declare the said area as HOTSPOTS or RESTRICTED ZONES for the health and safety of the local people.
