The state working committee of Communist Party of India(Marxist) strongly condemns the arrest of four activists including Mr.Thirumurugan Gandhi coordinator of May17 Movement by Chennai metropolitan police under ‘’The Goondas Act’’. Holding hunger strikes, protest marches and sloganeering are basic citizen rights guaranteed under the constitution. For conducting these events using the above mentioned methods the police usually does not give permission but later they detain for a day if it is conducted and leave the protestors peacefully. This is the usual practice followed. But charging the activists including Mr.Thirumurugan Gandhi under ‘’The Goondas Act” without any preliminary inquiries is a undemocratic measure. So the state working committee of CPI-M strongly condemns the heavy handedness of the police and we insist the government and the police to repeal the ‘’The Goondas Act’’ filed against them and the detained activists must be released. Comrade- G.Ramakrishnan State General Secretary Communist Party of India (Marxist)
