Withdraw the new amendments to the Karnataka Urban Development Authorities Act 1987
The Issue
A recent study by the Indian Institute Of Science’s centre for ecological sciences (CES) shows that there has been a growth of 632% in urban areas of Bangalore. It also reveals that Bangalore has overshot its development capacity (by 47%). The study titled ‘Greater Bangalore, emerging urban heat island’ says that the built up area is now 632% with 79% loss of vegetation and 78% loss of water bodies.
“Also the number of lakes in Bangalore has come down from 159 to only 93. Strangely, the BBMP claims there are still 212 lakes in the City. The government needs to realize that Bangalore can’t take in anymore developmental work; enough damage has already been done. Now the government should focus on restoring lakes and no green land should be given out for construction,” Says Environmentalist Yellappa Reddy. (Source: MyBangalore)
I'm a native Bangalorean and have lived here all 44 years of my life. It is heartbreaking to watch it being destroyed by people who are driven solely by greed and power. One would think such a damning indictment by the IISc study would jolt our elected representatives into action to save our city; instead, our legislators come together to amend the Karnataka Urban Development Authorities Act of 1987 and allow further shrinking of public spaces; the earlier allocated percentage for public spaces and amenities for new layouts were 15% and 10% respectively; the amendment allows this to be further reduced to 10% and 5% respectively allowing larger built-up areas which as the IISc report shows has already pushed this city to the brink. That legislators "cutting across party lines" can come together is itself evidence of how deeply entrenched the rot is - no issue ever unites our politicians except personal greed.
It is time for us, the citizens, to claim back our city. It is a well-known fact that the real estate mafia (one among many mafias in Bangalore) is in bed with the politicians. Our city has been destroyed by people who have been elected to protect it. Citizen voices cannot be excluded from a move of this nature which directly affects us.
