Freedom from Censorship
The Issue
Cosmic Sex is a much acclaimed Bengali feature film about the Deha Tathya cult of harnessing sexual energy for spiritual practice. Cosmic Sex has been cleared by the CBFC with an "A" certificate. The film has been screened at various prestigious film festivals including the International Film Festival of Kerala and Osians Cine Fan Festival of Arab and Asian Cinema where it won the Best Actress Award. It has already been screened at Nandan as the closing film of FFSI's National Film Festival organized by Federation of Film Societies of India and at the Metro Cinema as the closing film of the Cine Central Film Festival. State government owned Nandan theatre has now stated that Cosmic Sex is inappropriate for viewing at Nandan.
It ought to be a mandate of a government owned theatre like Nandan to support independent cinema. The film is for the people to like/dislike, love/hate, accept/reject. What are the reasons for which Nandan finds the film inappropriate? Why this double censorship? What's the use of the Shyam Bengal's scissor-less rating system if other agencies continue to censor films on the ground?
We want the process of selection of films at Nandan to be made more transparent and equitable so that independent filmmakers get a fair opportunity to showcase their films.
