Leave Aarey Alone!

I might already be late in making this request. Partial construction of metro car shed in the Aarey colony, last standing green lungs of Mumbai, has already begun.

No doubt metro is much required, but not at the cost of 3130 fully grown trees. What took decades to form will be annihilated over-night. Beyond filtering our toxic air, Aarey is home to 76 species of birds, 86 species of butterflies, 13 species of amphibians, 38 different types of reptiles, 19 spider species and 34 different types of wild flowers.

RTI request revealed that a government resolution from 2010 had selected the Mahalaxmi Racecourse for constructing the metro care shed. Is horse racing more important than biodiversity? There are vast lands with illegal encroachments all across Mumbai, but Aarey is just an easy choice.

Metro car shed is just the first blow. Next in line is a Zoo and a botanical garden on 113 hectares within Aarey! Are we not suffering one zoo enough already? And, it does not end there either. Government is further planning 8 projects, including an underground tunnel, a ropeway and parking lots in the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park. If realized, it will result in loss of green cover of the size of 95 football fields! And all these new projects while the current transportation system is highly underutilized.

We all have to say in one voice to the government to please leave our green spaces ALONE. Each vote counts.

Support this letter to request Maharashtra Government to not construct metro car shed in the Aarey Colony.

Honorable Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ji, there is less than half a tree available per person in Mumbai. What steps is the government taking to rejuvenate biodiversity? Is the government going to create more Aareys or increase the area under the National Park? If even the trees in the forest /no development zones are not safe then random tree plantation is not the solution.
