Save Queensway started this petition to Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Government of Gibraltar,

SAVE QUEENSWAY QUAY

  • An iconic location enjoyed by Gibraltarians and visitors
  • An area steeped in Gibraltar’s rich history
  • A place where local businesses thrive
  • A unique setting offering breath-taking views across two continents
  • An important and sizeable community meeting place seven days a week

Help stop the senseless destruction of Queensway Quay

  • Three proposed developments out of proportion and out of character with the tranquil heritage sunny marine environment
  • The five-year build will exterminate the bars, restaurants and social atmosphere from the moment they start to build
  • Excessive demands on existing infrastructure, services and the impact on local amenities will be catastrophic
  • Government and local authorities must act in the best interest of its citizens and reject these outrageous proposals

THE PLANNED PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF:

The construction of a hotel with proposed 120 rooms and 45 serviced apartments with commercial uses to be located at the centre of the Marina;
A proposed 11 storey building for commercial and residential use located between Ragged Staff and Cormorant Wharf;
New development in marine waters behind Cormorant Wharf.

The local community has the following concerns:

Destruction of the Local Waterfront and the Attractive, Vibrant, yet Tranquil, Recreational Character of the Marina and Loss of its Visual Amenity.
The loss of Connectivity between the Town and its Waterfront.
Loss of Open Space, contrary to Policy GDS4 of the Gibraltar Development Plan.
Adverse impact on Marine Ecology and the Natural Environment.
Negative effect on Vistas into and out of the Marina.
Insensitive, Disproportional Overdevelopment to the detriment of the Character and Appearance of the area.
Increase in Traffic and further Pressure on Highway Safety and Car Parking Provision.
Excessive Demands on Existing Infrastructure, Services and Local Amenities.
The Impact of Noise and Disturbance emanating from the Proposed Use
The Proposal is contrary to Several Planning Policies contained within the Gibraltar Development Plan, 2009.

We seek our waterfront to remain a place of public enjoyment, where there is ample visual and physical public access – all day, all year - to both the water and the land.

This petition is an outreach to members of the impacted communities and concerned members of the public to express their position on the proposed development.
