Oppose the takeover of NUJS by Mamata Banerjee and the appointment of NK Chakrabarti as VC

The National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata is one of India's top law schools. NUJS was established in 1999 by Professor NR Madhava Menon (the founder of the National Law School in Bangalore) at the personal invitation of then Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, with support from his colleague Somnath Chatterjee (both barristers educated in England who wished for Kolkata to have a world-class law school). Since its inception, NUJS students have won many laurels, including winning prestigious international moot court competitions, being awarded scholarships at the world's leading universities (including the Rhodes, Fulbright, Chevening, Commonwealth, Inlaks and Felix scholarships) and acing competitive examinations like the UPSC and IIM CAT. It is a matter of pride for the state of West Bengal that bright students from all over India aspire to study at NUJS.

Since Professor Menon's departure, NUJS was fortunate to have two equally distinguished academicians at its helm, namely Professor BS Chimni of JNU and Professor MP Singh of Delhi University (both jurists of international standing). Unfortunately, in recent years, NUJS has faced constant political interference from the Mamata Banerjee government. In 2013, she appointed her personal astrologer to the Executive Committee of NUJS, sharing space with illustrious Senior Advocates and judges.   More recently, a large number of her cronies have been appointed to the Executive Committee and shunned transparency and accountability.

While all instances of political interference are too voluminous to list, the newest and most serious example is the selection of Professor N K Chakrabarti  as the next Vice Chancellor fo NUJS. Professor Chakrabarti (who publicly tweets in supports for Mamata Banerjee) has a resume that is vastly inferior not only in comparison to the illustrious scholars who have previously headed NUJS, but also in comparison to a distinguished academician who was shortlisted alongside him but inexplicably looked over -- Professor VC Vivekanandan, a PhD holder from the National Law School in Bangalore, who is a professor at the renowned NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad and was previously Professor and Dean at IIT Kharagpur's Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law.

It is also a matter of grave concern that, according to media reports, Professor Chakrabarti was probed for serious misconduct while at Calcutta University and accused of falsifying his resume.

We thus urge citizens of India, and West Bengal in particular, to oppose the appointment of Professor Chakrabarti and the continued interference in the affairs of NUJS by the Mamata Banerjee government.
