Every year, Oxon Hill High School books a person of prominence to deliver the commencement address to the graduating class. The high school has a rich history of selecting speakers who bring a refreshing, positive perspective on life, such as former White House intern and Oxon Hill grad, Haywood L. Perry in 2014.
Taraji P. Henson graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1988. The talented actress was crowned homecoming queen her senior year. After nearly two decades in Hollywood and numerous false starts, there are valuable lessons we can learn from the slow and steady progression of Henson’s career. These lessons can be applied to anyone no matter their industry.
After she graduated from Howard University, Henson decided to chase her dreams to become an actress. The single mother moved to Los Angeles with only $700 to her name and her son, Marcell. Two decades later the Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner has taken over television as Cookie Lyon. Despite her busy schedule she still finds time to give back. Her recent charity work includes her support for The Heart Truth, UNICEF and A Place Called Home. Henson recently announced that her memoir, Around The Way Girl, is coming out this fall. Let’s welcome her back around the way!
As signees of this petition, we strongly urge the Prince George’s County Public School’s administration to invite Taraji P. Henson as the commencement speaker for the graduation ceremony in May 2017.
